When a student writes in TeachLex, two things are recorded: the writing level itself, and how it came together.
Over a term, that becomes a baseline for each student: the vocabulary and sentence patterns they usually reach for, and the pace and habits they display with writing. Each student holds separate baselines for timed work and homework, because students often write very differently under a clock. New writing is then read against that student’s own baseline, which gets an accurate comparison when detecting changes.
- A baseline is built only from that student’s own work, never from classmates and never from a general model of good writing
- Nothing is compared until the baseline is steady, usually around five pieces of writing
- Keystroke timing is recorded, never keystroke content. No screens, cameras, or location
- A difference is reported as a difference. The report never states a cause
of TOEFL essays written by non-native English speakers were false-flagged as machine generated by AI detectors in a Stanford study.
That failure rate is why TeachLex does not run a detector. Your teachers get a record of how the writing happened, and they keep the decision.
